Bedding

The bedding for a hamster deserves attention. His legs and airways are very sensitive and are easily irritated. Therefore, many common rodent ground covers are not suitable for hamsters. A good ground cover is soft and absorbent, so your hamster will keep its feet dry. Digging gives a hamster satisfaction and a sense of security. This is best done in a bottom layer of at least 15 cm high for dwarf hamsters and 20 cm high for Syrian hamsters. Not everything needs to be done equally high in layers. You can create different areas in the enclosure with different types of bedding. This offers variation in scent and structure. You can also mix ground cover together, this often gives a reinforced effect.
Types of bedding
There are many different types of bedding on the marked, you can hardly imagine it. I have listed the bedding that I use or have used below.
Joris No Smell Cotton N Cotton
This is the bedding that I Currently use and which I am very satisfied with. You can mix this bedding with others such as hemp or hay. I myself mix it with hemp. Without mixing, the tunnels and cavities also remain beautifully intact, so mixing is not necessary, but it can be beautiful.

Advantages of Joris No Smell Cotton N Cotton

  • Dust-free
  • Absorbs very well
  • Soft and warm
  • Tunnels remain intact
  • Natural color
Chipsi Carefresh
Carefresh bedding is made from cellulose fibers. These cellulose fibers come from organic cultivation. Carefresh is very soft and absorbs well. Carefresh is available in different colors, which is very nice, because you can decorate the Hamster enclosure in any desired color.

Joris No Smell Exotic N Kokos
The coconut fiber alone is not suitable as a ground cover, because it simply does not completely cover the bottom. However, coconut fiber is a lot of fun as a top layer! Not only beautiful to look at, but also absorbs well and is mold resistant. I think coconut fiber looks great, the color of the coconut fiber combines beautifully with moss, for example. I also sprinkle food through the coconut fiber every night so that my hamster has to look for food. The seeds fall through the coconut fiber onto the ground cover below and the animals have to make their way through the coconut fiber to get to it. This in turn stimulates the natural behavior of the hamster.

Coconut fiber Humus
The Coconut Fiber Humus is a mixture of Coconut Fiber and Humus. Coconut fiber is airy bedding and is fun for hamsters to burrow in. However, the tunnels will not remain intact. The coconut fiber is also very suitable as a substrate for fresh plants. These can take root well in it. Note that this surface can be damp. It is therefore not advisable to combine it with wood because of the formation of mold.
I usually use the humus in a small part of the enclosure so that there is a kind of variation in bedding, but you could also use it as the only bedding.

Benefits of coconut fiber

  • Stimulates digging behavior
  • Cheap
  • To be used as a substrate for plants
Mini hemp
Mini-Hemp is made from the fine wood core of fiber hemp. Mini-Hemp provides animals with a hygienic and comfortable living environment. Thanks to the natural sponge effect of hemp wood, moisture and odors are better absorbed. Ammonia is specifically bound and absorbed by hemp litter. I always combine mini hemp with the cotton N cotton as bedding. I personally think this is the best combination.
