A hamster’s teeth are very important because most of your hamster’s diet consists of hard foods. The growth of the teeth continues throughout their lives, it is therefore important that your hamster wears its teeth by gnawing on gnawing material. Therefore, check regularly that your hamster’s teeth are healthy.
What you should pay attention to when checking your hamster’s teeth is the length and shape. If one of the lower or upper teeth is shorter than the adjacent tooth, the tooth may have broken off. Healthy teeth are about the same length as the ones next to them (unless they both look blunt, in which case they can both be broken off). Also make sure that the upper tooth does not take the place of the lower tooth (or vice versa). When two teeth differ in length, it may be wise to take your hamster to the vet. This can be very painful for your hamster and it can prevent him from eating well. Another symptom that your hamster has a broken tooth is blood / scabs around his mouth. Many people are unnecessarily concerned about the yellowness of their hamster’s teeth. Young hamsters have white teeth that darken as they age and even turn quite yellow when they are adults. Don’t worry if you see your hamster’s teeth are not as white as yours. When an older hamster’s teeth suddenly turn white, it could even indicate a health problem.
