Nightly adventures

Nobody will have missed that hamsters are nocturnal animals. Harry is my hamster, and I don’t often see him during the day. Harry is a Russian dwarf hamster, which means that he is also active during the day. But when he is awake during the day, he usually stays in his hideout. I was very curious what his nightlife looked like. What are hamsters doing at night when we are all sleeping? That’s why I bought a night camera and hung it in Harry’s enclosur, so I can watch every morning what Harry was doing that night. What I saw surprised me! Harry spends most of his time running in his running wheel. This is also not surprising when you consider that a hamster travels a lot of miles in the wild at night. But I didn’t expect that it would be so much and especially so long in a row. I filmed Harry for a couple of nights and found that he runs in his running wheel for an average of 5 hours between 11pm and 6am. Sometimes up to 90 minutes in a row (with short breath breaks). I love to see what Harry is up to at night, and I’m definitely going to investigate more. What does Harry do the rest of the time when he’s not running? Below some nice snaps of Harry in his running wheel.
